It is an unfortunate reality that many Muslims, despite belonging to the Ummah of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), do not truly know the Ahl al-Bayt (the Family of the Prophet) or make sufficient efforts to learn about them. Even when they are recognized, they are not always given the respect and love they deserve. The Ahl al-Bayt were the beloved family of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), and their love is firmly established in the Qur’an and the Sunnah. Allah the Almighty declares in the Holy Qur’an: قل لااسئلكم عليه اجرا الا المودة فى القربى meaning: “Say (O Muhammad): I ask of you no reward for this message except love for my near relatives.” (Surah Ash-Shura: 23). After the revelation of this verse, the Companions respectfully asked, “O Messenger of Allah, who are those relatives whose love has been made obligatory upon us?” According to the reports, the Prophet (ﷺ) replied that they are Ali ibn Abi Talib, Fatimah al-Zahra, Hasan ibn Ali, Husayn ibn Ali (may Allah be pleased with them), and their descendants. The Holy Qur’an further proclaims their purity in the verse: “Indeed, Allah only intends to remove all impurity from you, O People of the House, and to purify you completely.” (Surah Al-Ahzab: 33). Many prominent Companions, including Abu Sa’id al-Khudri, Aisha, and Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with them), narrated that this verse was revealed concerning Ali, Fatimah, Hasan, and Husayn. This understanding is further supported by the famous narration known as the Hadith of the Cloak, in which the Prophet (ﷺ) gathered Ali, Fatimah, Hasan, and Husayn beneath his cloak and recited the verse of purification before supplicating: اللهم هؤلاء أهل بيتي وخاصتي فأذهب عنهم الرجس وطهرهم تطهيرا meaning: “O Allah, these are my household and my closest family. Remove all impurity from them and purify them completely.” (Sahih Muslim). In another authentic narration, Usamah ibn Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that he saw Hasan and Husayn sitting on the lap of the Prophet (ﷺ), who then prayed: اللهم إني أحبهما فأحبهما وأحب من يحبهما meaning: “O Allah, I love these two, so love them and love those who love them.” (Jami’ al-Tirmidhi). These narrations clearly establish that the Ahl al-Bayt include Ali, Fatimah, Hasan, Husayn, and their noble descendants. The status of the Ahl al-Bayt occupies a unique place in Islam. They are honored because of their close relationship with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and because Allah Himself praised and purified them in the Qur’an. The Prophet (ﷺ) loved Imam Hasan and Imam Husayn as his own sons, and authentic narrations describe them as among the people who most closely resembled him in appearance. Reports also mention that Imam Hasan resembled the Prophet (ﷺ) from the chest upward, while Imam Husayn resembled him from the chest downward. The family of the Prophet belongs to the noblest lineage chosen by Allah. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said that Allah selected Kinanah from among the descendants of Isma’il, selected Quraysh from Kinanah, selected Banu Hashim from Quraysh, and finally selected him from Banu Hashim. Therefore, loving, honoring, and respecting the Ahl al-Bayt is regarded as a noble virtue in Islam and remains an enduring expression of devotion to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ).
