United States Special Operations Forces are reportedly preparing contingency plans for what some military analysts have described as a potentially unprecedented ground operation aimed at securing Iran’s remaining stockpile of highly enriched uranium, according to a report published by the New York Post. However, no official confirmation has been issued by the US government that such an operation has been approved or is imminent. The report, citing unnamed sources familiar with military planning, claims that any potential mission would target heavily fortified Iranian nuclear facilities, including deeply buried sites believed to house sensitive nuclear materials. Analysts say such an operation, if ever authorised, would require an extraordinary combination of Special Operations units, combat engineers, explosive ordnance disposal teams, intelligence assets and air support to penetrate hardened underground complexes, neutralise defensive positions, secure nuclear material and safely extract or safeguard enriched uranium without triggering a wider regional conflict. Military experts quoted in the report describe the hypothetical mission as one of the most technically demanding operations ever contemplated, given the complexity of operating inside hostile territory, the risks associated with handling nuclear material and the likelihood of fierce resistance from Iranian security forces. The report emerges amid continuing tensions between Washington and Tehran over Iran’s nuclear programme and broader regional security concerns. Western governments have repeatedly expressed concern over Iran’s expanding stockpile of enriched uranium, while Tehran maintains that its nuclear programme is intended exclusively for peaceful civilian purposes and rejects allegations that it is seeking to develop nuclear weapons. Although the reported contingency planning underscores the strategic importance attached to Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, there is currently no publicly verified evidence that the United States has made a final decision to launch such a ground operation. As diplomatic efforts remain fragile and military options continue to be assessed behind closed doors, the report highlights the high stakes surrounding one of the world’s most sensitive nuclear and geopolitical disputes.
