Doha—Qatar has categorically rejected allegations that it detained Iranian military pilots, saying it instead conducted a search-and-rescue operation to locate the crews of downed Iranian fighter aircraft in accordance with international law and humanitarian standards; Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesman, Majed Mohammed Al-Ansari, said in a statement posted on X on Saturday that Qatari authorities attempted to contact the Iranian pilots after they entered Qatari airspace but received no response, prompting Doha to take measures to protect its territory and airspace in accordance with international law and launch a search-and-rescue operation following the incident; Qatari authorities said the operation recovered the body of at least one pilot and that Doha had contacted Tehran regarding the handover of the remains, while Iran was invited to send a delegation to Qatar to receive detailed information about the rescue operation, although Doha said it had yet to receive a response; Qatar’s account directly contradicts an earlier allegation by Iranian military commander Seyyed Mohammad Bagherzadeh, who reportedly told the International Committee of the Red Cross that three pilots from two Su-24 fighter jets shot down in Qatari airspace had been detained in Doha for months; Iran has meanwhile said DNA testing confirmed the death of Brigadier General pilot Majid Kazemi and that efforts are continuing to determine the fate of the other missing crew members; the competing claims have emerged as diplomatic efforts intensify to contain military tensions involving Iran, Qatar and the wider Gulf region, with the security of commercial and energy shipping through the Strait of Hormuz remaining a major international concern; tensions between Tehran and Doha have also increased over the reported attack on Qatar’s Ras Laffan gas infrastructure, while Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has said that messages between Tehran and Washington are being exchanged through Qatar and Pakistan, although direct Iran-US talks have yet to resume; the conflicting accounts over the fate of the Iranian pilots have added another sensitive dimension to the regional crisis, underscoring the need for a transparent investigation, direct information-sharing and cooperation between the two sides to establish what happened to the missing crew members and the crews of the downed aircraft.
