UAE builds huge steel structure around fuel tanks amid fears of drone attacks

The United Arab Emirates has strengthened the protection of critical fuel infrastructure by installing large steel-and-mesh structures around major storage tanks in Abu Dhabi, according to recent reports, as concerns grow over the vulnerability of energy facilities to Iranian drone attacks. Similar protective structures have reportedly been installed near fuel-storage areas serving Dubai International Airport, highlighting a broader shift toward hardening critical infrastructure against low-flying unmanned aerial threats.

The structures, often described as protective “cages,” are designed to create an additional physical barrier around fuel tanks. Their purpose is not to replace sophisticated air-defence systems, but to provide another layer of protection if an explosive-laden drone manages to penetrate the wider defensive perimeter. By placing a steel framework between an incoming drone and the tank itself, the system could potentially disrupt a direct impact and reduce the concentration of an explosion on the vulnerable tank surface.

The reported construction reflects a wider lesson emerging from recent conflicts: relatively inexpensive drones can pose a disproportionate threat to expensive and strategically important infrastructure. Fuel-storage tanks are particularly sensitive targets because a successful strike can trigger fires, secondary explosions and prolonged disruption to nearby industrial facilities, airports, ports and transportation networks.

The UAE’s decision to reinforce fuel infrastructure comes amid heightened military tensions involving Iran and several Gulf states. The threat environment has increasingly included drones as well as ballistic and cruise missiles, forcing regional governments to consider multiple layers of defence rather than relying exclusively on interceptors, fighter aircraft and radar networks.

The steel cages are best understood as a form of passive defence. Unlike interceptor missiles or electronic countermeasures, they do not attempt to detect and destroy an approaching drone. Instead, they seek to reduce the consequences of an impact. Such systems can be installed around vulnerable assets comparatively quickly and may offer a practical supplement to more expensive air-defence technologies.

However, the structures have clear limitations. They are not designed to defeat ballistic missiles or high-speed cruise missiles, and their effectiveness would vary depending on the size, speed, explosive payload and direction of an attacking drone. A determined attacker could also attempt to bypass the protected area or use multiple drones simultaneously. Consequently, the cages are unlikely to be a standalone solution and would need to operate alongside radar, surveillance, electronic warfare, point-defence weapons, firefighting systems and other protective measures.

The move also reflects the strategic importance of the UAE’s energy infrastructure. Abu Dhabi is a major regional energy hub, while the country’s ports, airports, storage terminals and gas facilities are deeply connected to international supply chains. Any prolonged disruption to these assets could have consequences extending beyond the UAE, potentially affecting regional fuel availability, shipping activity and energy-market sentiment.

The concept of surrounding vulnerable military or industrial assets with metal frameworks is not entirely new. Similar protective structures have been used in other conflict zones to complicate attacks by small drones. Their increasing use in the Gulf illustrates how lessons from modern warfare are rapidly being transferred into civilian infrastructure protection.

For the UAE, the challenge is particularly complex because its critical facilities are concentrated in economically strategic locations. Protecting them requires a combination of physical barriers, early-warning systems and active air defence. The new cages therefore represent one component of a broader “layered defence” strategy in which authorities seek both to prevent an attack and to limit damage if an incoming weapon gets through.

The development also carries a wider geopolitical message. Gulf states are increasingly preparing for the possibility that future conflicts involving Iran could extend beyond military bases and directly threaten energy, aviation and commercial infrastructure. The protection of fuel tanks is therefore not merely an engineering issue; it is closely linked to national resilience, economic continuity and regional energy security.

If tensions continue to rise, the UAE’s approach could become a model for other energy-producing countries in the region. Similar passive-protection measures could be adopted around oil terminals, gas facilities, aviation-fuel depots and other high-value infrastructure where even a limited drone strike could cause significant disruption.

Ultimately, the giant metal cages around UAE fuel tanks offer a visible illustration of how the character of modern conflict is changing. The contest is no longer limited to sophisticated missile interceptors and fighter aircraft. Governments are increasingly looking for comparatively simple ways to protect critical assets from relatively inexpensive drones. Whether such structures can significantly reduce damage in a future large-scale attack remains uncertain, but their rapid adoption demonstrates that the Gulf’s energy infrastructure is being prepared for a new and increasingly unpredictable security environment.
