WASHINGTON/ANKARA/LONDON — U.S. President Donald Trump was secretly transferred from Air Force One to a smaller military aircraft during his return from Turkey last month after U.S. officials received an Iranian assassination threat, according to a report by The Washington Post. The extraordinary security operation was designed to conceal Trump’s actual location and prevent a potential attacker from determining which aircraft was carrying the president.
According to the report, Trump initially appeared to board the legacy Air Force One in Ankara, waving to cameras and giving the impression that he would fly back to Britain aboard the presidential aircraft. But after entering the plane, Trump was reportedly moved out through another side of the aircraft and transferred to a smaller U.S. military aircraft with the help of an airport catering vehicle.
The operation reportedly involved a carefully coordinated deception designed to make it appear that Trump remained aboard the presidential aircraft. Journalists and some White House personnel stayed on the plane, apparently unaware that the president had already been moved elsewhere.
The episode began after Trump attended the NATO summit in Turkey. He had arrived aboard the new Boeing 747-8 aircraft gifted by Qatar, but the security arrangements for his return were reportedly altered after intelligence officials became concerned about a possible Iranian attempt to kill him.
The Qatari-gifted aircraft reportedly departed Turkey first and headed toward Britain. Trump then publicly boarded the older presidential aircraft in Ankara, creating the appearance that he would follow the same route.
Once inside, however, Trump was allegedly moved through a concealed route and taken by an airport catering truck to a nearby C-32A military aircraft, a modified Boeing 757 used by senior U.S. officials. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth was also reportedly aboard the military aircraft.
Meanwhile, journalists and White House staff remained on the older presidential aircraft. They were reportedly instructed to keep the aircraft’s window shades closed, further limiting the ability of people outside the plane to determine who was actually aboard.
The presidential aircraft subsequently took off as a decoy. It reportedly used the presidential call sign normally associated with the president’s aircraft, despite Trump no longer being aboard.
Trump’s actual aircraft, meanwhile, reportedly flew to Britain under the less recognizable call sign “Reach 18.” Its normal flight-tracking systems were allegedly disabled for part of the journey, making it more difficult to determine the president’s precise location.
The military aircraft carrying Trump reportedly arrived at Britain’s Royal Air Force Mildenhall shortly before the decoy presidential aircraft. The exact manner in which Trump was later transferred back onto the presidential aircraft remains unclear, according to The Washington Post.
Trump subsequently emerged from the presidential aircraft in front of cameras, creating the public impression that he had traveled from Turkey aboard that plane. He later boarded the newer Qatari-gifted presidential aircraft and continued his journey to Washington alongside journalists and White House personnel.
The reported operation has raised questions about the extent to which journalists and other passengers aboard the decoy aircraft were aware of the security plan. If they were unaware that Trump had already been transferred to another aircraft, they may have been placed aboard a plane that was deliberately being used to obscure the president’s true location.
The episode also sheds new light on the seriousness of the threats surrounding Trump amid escalating tensions between Washington and Tehran. Trump has publicly spoken about Iranian threats against him, while U.S. officials have repeatedly expressed concern over potential retaliatory attacks connected to the broader confrontation with Iran.
