Like oil, United States is also the world’s leading producer of natural gas; in 2024, nearly one-quarter of global gas supply came from the country, and in reality it remains far ahead of the second- and third-largest producers. According to the latest data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), as analyzed by Visual Capitalist, the global gas market largely depends on production from a handful of major countries. Ongoing instability in the Middle East has tightened gas supplies much like oil, prompting many nations to turn to the United States as a more reliable source, thereby increasing its strategic importance in the global energy market. In 2024, the United States produced 37,751 billion cubic feet of natural gas—more than 1.6 times the output of Russia and close to the combined production of Iran and China; no other country comes close, and even the gap between the U.S. and Russia exceeds the total output of many countries in the top ten. Among others, Algeria produced 3,496 billion cubic feet and remains a key supplier to Europe via both pipelines and LNG despite political and economic challenges; Saudi Arabia produced 4,344 billion cubic feet and is rapidly expanding its gas sector—particularly through the Jafurah shale gas project—as part of its Vision 2030 strategy to diversify energy use and reduce reliance on oil; China, while increasing production, continues to face surging industrial demand, making it both a major producer and importer relying on pipelines and LNG; Iran, with 9,853 billion cubic feet of output, holds vast reserves but struggles to reach full capacity due to sanctions and limited investment, with most of its gas consumed domestically; meanwhile, Russia, producing 22,672 billion cubic feet, has long been a dominant supplier to Europe, but geopolitical tensions and sanctions have reduced its exports there, pushing it toward Asian markets, especially China, despite infrastructure constraints. Ultimately, the United States’ leadership is driven by its shale gas revolution, advanced technology, strong private investment, and extensive pipeline network; it not only meets domestic demand but also plays a crucial role in supplying LNG to Europe and Asia—especially after the Russia–Ukraine War—as Western countries reduced dependence on Russian energy, making the United States one of the most reliable sources of natural gas in today’s volatile geopolitical landscape.
