WASHINGTON — U.S. President Donald Trump is facing growing political pressure ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, with concerns over the economy, tariffs, foreign policy, domestic spending and election rules increasingly becoming a challenge for Republicans seeking to retain control of Congress. An analysis published by the Los Angeles Times argued that Trump’s approval ratings, combined with a series of controversial policy decisions and statements, could create significant difficulties for Republican candidates at a time when the party is preparing for a closely watched congressional contest. The analysis cited several recent polls indicating that roughly 60% of Americans disapprove of Trump’s job performance, while his approval rating has fallen to around 38% or lower, a level that could become a major liability for Republican candidates campaigning in competitive districts and states. Economic concerns are also emerging as a central political issue, particularly as Americans continue to face pressure from higher prices and the effects of Trump’s tariff policies. His administration has defended its trade strategy, but critics argue that tariffs and continuing uncertainty over exemptions and imports have increased costs for consumers and businesses. Trump’s recent proposal to allow tariff-free imports of beef in an effort to reduce food prices has also generated concern among U.S. cattle producers, particularly in rural states where Republicans have traditionally enjoyed strong support. At the same time, Trump’s confrontation with Canada has become another politically sensitive issue. Trade and tourism disruptions linked to the dispute are being closely watched in several northern states, including Maine, Michigan, Ohio and Alaska, where Republican candidates face competitive Senate races. Trump has also drawn criticism over plans for a large ballroom at the White House, as well as his position on expanding data centres across the United States. Opposition to large data-centre projects has intensified in several communities because of concerns over electricity costs, infrastructure and the limited number of jobs such facilities can create. Trump’s comments attacking communities opposed to data centres have further intensified the political debate. Foreign policy and the continuing conflict involving Iran are creating another challenge for the administration. The Los Angeles Times analysis, citing a Washington Post report, said senior Pentagon officials had warned that continuing military operations could place additional pressure on U.S. security and military resources. Trump had previously declared the mission accomplished before renewed strikes were launched, raising further questions about the duration and objectives of the conflict. The administration has also faced internal tensions over military leadership and management, adding to the political uncertainty surrounding the president’s foreign-policy agenda. Meanwhile, Trump and Republican leaders are pursuing efforts that could strengthen the party’s electoral position despite concerns over the president’s popularity. Those efforts include redrawing congressional district boundaries in Republican-controlled states and seeking greater federal influence over mail-in voting procedures. A whistleblower report attributed to a U.S. Postal Service official reportedly warned that rapid changes to the administration of mail ballots could create serious operational problems ahead of the election. Republicans are also concerned that some voters who supported the party in previous elections may become disillusioned and either stay home or support Democratic candidates. The stakes are therefore high for both parties. For Democrats, the election represents an opportunity to capitalize on dissatisfaction with Trump and regain congressional power. For Republicans, the challenge is to maintain voter enthusiasm while defending the president’s record and protecting vulnerable seats. The 2026 midterm elections are consequently shaping up as a major test of Trump’s political influence, the durability of Republican support and the public’s assessment of his economic and foreign policies. Ultimately, voter turnout, economic conditions, the trajectory of the Iran conflict and the effectiveness of both parties’ campaigns could determine whether Republicans retain control of Congress or Democrats make significant gains in Washington.
