Malaysia takes a firm stand for Palestine, says ‘no’ to entry of Israeli citizens

Malaysia has firmly reaffirmed that its longstanding policy of refusing to recognise the State of Israel remains unchanged, despite mounting criticism from several members of the United States Congress and renewed diplomatic pressure from Washington. Speaking to the US State Department, Malaysian officials stressed that the country’s position is rooted in decades of foreign policy and is closely tied to its unwavering support for Palestinian statehood and opposition to Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories. Authorities emphasised that Malaysia’s immigration policy has never recognised Israel as a sovereign state, making the exclusion of Israeli passport holders a continuation of existing national policy rather than a newly introduced measure.
The latest diplomatic dispute emerged after Malaysian authorities revealed that an individual who entered the country using a United States passport was later found to possess dual US-Israeli citizenship. Following additional security and immigration checks, the individual was instructed to leave Malaysia. Officials said the decision was fully consistent with the country’s immigration regulations, which prohibit the entry of Israeli nationals due to Malaysia’s longstanding non-recognition policy.
The controversy intensified after the Network School, a digital nomad community founded by American technology investor Balaji Srinivasan, became the focus of public scrutiny when social media users alleged that Israeli citizens had participated in one of its programmes in Malaysia. Although an official investigation concluded that all participants possessed valid travel documents and had complied with immigration requirements, Malaysian authorities nevertheless ordered the closure of the programme, citing broader concerns arising from the incident.
The issue quickly escalated into a diplomatic confrontation after eight Republican members of the US Congress sent a strongly worded letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio condemning Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s policy of identifying and deporting Israeli citizens found in the country. The lawmakers urged the State Department to reassess economic, diplomatic and security cooperation with Kuala Lumpur, arguing that Malaysia’s actions discriminate against Israeli nationals and undermine relations with the United States. They further called for the suspension of funding for the International Military Education and Training (IMET) programme, which provides professional military education to Malaysian armed forces personnel, unless Malaysia reversed its policy within fifteen days.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim responded defiantly, declaring that Malaysia would not alter its position under foreign pressure. He stated that the country’s policy is guided by its constitutional principles, national sovereignty and moral commitment to defending the rights of the Palestinian people. Anwar said external threats or political pressure would not deter Malaysia from maintaining its longstanding prohibition on the entry of Israeli citizens, arguing that the government has a responsibility to oppose what he described as the oppression, occupation and continued killing of Palestinians in Gaza and the occupied West Bank.
Malaysia has never established diplomatic relations with Israel and has consistently been among the strongest supporters of Palestinian self-determination in Southeast Asia. Successive Malaysian governments have condemned Israeli military operations in Gaza, opposed the expansion of Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank and repeatedly called for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state based on internationally recognised borders. Analysts say the latest dispute highlights the widening diplomatic divide between Kuala Lumpur and Washington over Middle East policy while reinforcing Malaysia’s determination to maintain an independent foreign policy despite increasing international pressure.
The episode also reflects broader geopolitical tensions surrounding the Gaza conflict and the growing intersection of immigration policy, diplomatic recognition and international alliances. While the United States continues to deepen its strategic partnership with Israel, Malaysia insists that its policy is based on international justice, support for Palestinian rights and its sovereign authority to determine who may enter its territory. As diplomatic exchanges continue, the dispute is expected to remain a sensitive issue in US-Malaysia relations and a significant point of discussion across Southeast Asia and the wider international community.
