Jerusalem: The United States has officially signed an agreement to construct a permanent embassy complex in Jerusalem, marking another major step in implementing Washington’s long-standing policy recognizing the city as Israel’s capital. The project follows the decision made during President Donald Trump’s first term in December 2017, when the U.S. formally recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and initiated the relocation of its embassy from Tel Aviv.
According to the agreement, the new permanent embassy will be built at the Allenby Compound in southern Jerusalem and will serve as the primary hub for U.S. diplomatic operations in Israel. The project is expected to consolidate American diplomatic activities into a modern, purpose-built facility while reinforcing the strategic partnership between Washington and Jerusalem.
Speaking at the signing ceremony hosted by Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, U.S. Ambassador Mike Huckabee stated that the United States recognizes Jerusalem as the historic and eternal capital of the Jewish people. He added that the American flag will fly over the new embassy compound, symbolizing the enduring alliance and close cooperation between the two nations.
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar welcomed the agreement, describing it as another milestone in the strong bilateral relationship between Israel and the United States. He said the project reflects the depth of the partnership and the continued commitment of both governments to expanding diplomatic and strategic cooperation.
The announcement has also reignited international debate over the status of Jerusalem, one of the most sensitive issues in the Israeli–Palestinian conflict. Palestinians continue to claim East Jerusalem as the capital of a future independent Palestinian state, while the city’s final status remains a central issue in numerous international peace initiatives.
Meanwhile, Israeli human rights organization Adalah strongly criticized the planned construction. In a public statement, the group argued that the project would entrench what it described as a longstanding historical injustice. According to Adalah, the proposed embassy site is located on land that was confiscated from Palestinian owners under Israel’s 1950 Absentees’ Property Law, raising renewed concerns over land rights and property claims.
Political analysts note that while the permanent embassy project further strengthens U.S.–Israel diplomatic ties, it is also likely to intensify international discussions surrounding Jerusalem’s legal and political status. Observers believe the development could have broader implications for regional diplomacy, future peace negotiations, and the ongoing Israeli–Palestinian conflict, making it one of the most closely watched geopolitical developments in the Middle East.
