Amid rising tensions in the Middle East, Saudi Arabia’s security situation has become increasingly fragile due to the threat of Iranian drone attacks, with analysts suggesting that Iran’s aggressive posture toward several countries in the region stems from their cooperation with the United States and allowing military bases on their territory; in response, Riyadh has taken new steps to strengthen its air defense system, and according to AFP, two senior Saudi officials have confirmed these developments, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is currently visiting Saudi Arabia, and since Russia launched its military offensive against Ukraine in February 2022, the country has been facing continuous drone attacks, particularly from Iranian-made Shahed drones, leading Kyiv to gain significant expertise in countering such threats, and now Ukraine has expressed willingness to share that experience with Saudi Arabia; sources indicate that the two countries have signed a cooperation agreement, though it is not a direct arms deal, rather it focuses on helping Saudi Arabia develop its own integrated air defense system by utilizing Ukraine’s experience, potentially incorporating cost-effective interceptor drones, electronic jamming technologies, air defense guns, artificial intelligence, and data-driven security systems to effectively counter Shahed and similar drone threats, Ukrainian President Zelenskyy also confirmed meeting Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and stated that both nations have reached an understanding on defense cooperation, adding that Ukraine is ready to share its battlefield-tested experience while Saudi Arabia also possesses capabilities that could benefit Ukraine, although the detailed terms of the agreement have not yet been disclosed, both sides are expected to gain strategic advantages from this collaboration.
