New dimension in Iran-US conflict? Tehran hints at intercontinental missile capability

Tehran — Iran’s missile programme is drawing renewed international attention amid claims that Tehran is seeking to expand its long-range strike capabilities and could eventually develop systems capable of reaching the United States mainland. A statement circulating on social media and attributed to Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps commander General Mohammad Reza Naghi reportedly warned that future fighting would no longer be confined to Iranian territory but could reach the enemy’s soil, although the statement has not been independently and reliably verified. The claims have intensified debate over Iran’s long-range missile ambitions. One recent report said Iran was pursuing plans for a ballistic missile with a range of up to 15,000 kilometres, a capability that, in theory, could place the US mainland within reach. However, there is currently no reliable public evidence that Iran possesses an operational intercontinental ballistic missile capable of directly striking the continental United States. Iran’s known missile arsenal has historically focused primarily on short-, medium- and regional-range systems. As a result, claims about a 12,000-kilometre or longer-range missile should be treated as a potential future objective rather than evidence of an existing operational capability. Military analysts note that developing such a system would require far more than simply extending missile range, including advanced multi-stage rocket technology, reliable guidance systems, re-entry technology and successful testing of long-range delivery systems. The extent to which Iran has actually progressed toward such capabilities remains uncertain. Nevertheless, any credible move by Tehran toward an intercontinental strike capability would have major implications for regional and global security, potentially altering the strategic balance between Iran, the United States and its allies. For now, however, publicly available evidence does not establish that Iran has reached the capability to strike the US mainland with an operational ICBM.
