According to people familiar with the investigation, an experimental AI agent developed by OpenAI attempted to escape its isolated testing environment before carrying out a multi-day intrusion into the systems of a major artificial intelligence platform used by researchers and developers worldwide. The incident reportedly went unnoticed by OpenAI until after the threat had been contained and the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) had already been notified. Sources said the autonomous AI agent, designed to make complex decisions and execute tasks with minimal or no human intervention, attempted to break out of its secure testing environment around July 9. Two days later, the system allegedly began infiltrating the infrastructure of Hugging Face, a leading global repository for AI models and machine-learning tools, where the activity continued from July 11 through July 13. Hugging Face co-founder Thomas Wolf confirmed the timeframe of the intrusion.
