Ben-Gavir’s tough stance, sharp criticism of Palestinian female prisoners

JERUSALEM: Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir has praised what he described as harsh conditions imposed on Palestinian female prisoners, prompting renewed scrutiny of Israel’s treatment of Palestinian detainees and intensifying criticism from rights advocates over conditions inside Israeli prisons. Ben-Gvir, a far-right member of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government, has repeatedly advocated tougher measures against Palestinian prisoners and has portrayed restrictive prison policies as part of Israel’s security response to the conflict. His latest remarks have brought particular attention to the treatment of Palestinian women held in Israeli custody, amid wider allegations by Palestinian officials and human-rights organisations of overcrowding, inadequate medical care, restrictions on family visits and other forms of mistreatment in detention facilities. Palestinian authorities and rights groups have accused Israel of subjecting detainees to degrading conditions and collective punitive measures, while Israeli officials maintain that prison restrictions are necessary for security and are aimed at preventing detainees from coordinating attacks or maintaining militant activity from inside prisons. The issue has become increasingly sensitive since the outbreak of the Gaza war, as thousands of Palestinians have been detained by Israeli forces in Gaza and the occupied West Bank, while reports have emerged concerning the treatment of women and other vulnerable detainees. Rights organisations have called for independent investigations into allegations of abuse and for Israel to comply with international humanitarian and human-rights obligations governing the treatment of prisoners. Under international law, detainees must be treated humanely and protected from torture, cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment, regardless of the circumstances surrounding their detention. Ben-Gvir’s comments are therefore likely to fuel an already intense international debate over Israel’s prison policies and the broader treatment of Palestinians held in Israeli custody. The Israeli government has consistently argued that its detention and security measures are necessary to protect Israelis from terrorism, while Palestinian officials contend that Israel is using detention policies as a tool of repression. Independent verification of individual allegations can be difficult because access to detention facilities and information about detainees remains restricted. The controversy comes as international pressure continues to mount over the humanitarian and legal dimensions of Israel’s conduct in the occupied Palestinian territories, with rights groups urging greater transparency, judicial oversight and accountability for alleged abuses. The dispute over prison conditions has consequently become part of a much wider confrontation over Palestinian rights, Israeli security policy and the application of international law during the ongoing conflict.
