NEW YORK, September 23, 2026 — Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian arrived in New York on Wednesday to attend the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, bringing Iran’s diplomatic and political message to an international forum at a time of heightened tensions between Tehran and Washington and amid the continuing conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel.

Pezeshkian arrived at John F. Kennedy International Airport in the early hours of Wednesday, where he was received by Iranian diplomatic officials, including Iran’s ambassador and chargé d’affaires to the United Nations. His arrival came after the United States approved the attendance of a core Iranian delegation for the annual UN gathering, despite the continuing confrontation between Washington and Tehran.

The Iranian president’s visit comes at a particularly sensitive moment for the Middle East. The 81st General Assembly is taking place against the backdrop of the war between Iran and the United States and Israel, disputes over Iran’s nuclear programme, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, regional security concerns and tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz. Iran has presented its participation at the United Nations as an opportunity to explain its position directly to the international community while keeping diplomatic channels open.

Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and a senior Foreign Ministry delegation arrived in New York on Monday, ahead of the president. Araghchi has since conducted bilateral meetings with foreign ministers, diplomats and other international officials as part of Iran’s diplomatic activity on the sidelines of the General Assembly. Iranian officials have indicated that their primary objective in New York is to present Tehran’s position on the conflict and to pursue diplomatic avenues alongside political consultations.

Pezeshkian’s appearance before the 193-member General Assembly was closely watched because it came one day after U.S. President Donald Trump addressed the same forum and spoke extensively about the conflict with Iran. Trump warned that the United States could take further military action if Tehran did not agree to a settlement, while also indicating that negotiations remained possible.

Pezeshkian responded in his address by rejecting what he described as pressure and coercion. According to Reuters and Associated Press reports, the Iranian president said Tehran would not surrender while maintaining that diplomacy remained an option for ending the conflict. He accused the United States of adopting what he called a bullying approach and said threats would strengthen rather than weaken Iran’s resolve.

The Iranian president also framed the conflict in terms of national sovereignty and self-defence. He said Iran had not initiated the war and argued that Iranian civilians had been targeted during the conflict. He rejected the characterization of Iran as a terrorist state and said his country had defended itself after attacks by the United States and Israel.

Pezeshkian’s remarks reflected the broader position Tehran has presented throughout the conflict: resistance to military pressure combined with an expressed willingness to engage in diplomacy under conditions Iran considers acceptable. Iranian officials have repeatedly said that negotiations cannot take place under threats or military coercion.

The president’s visit also comes after several diplomatic contacts in New York. U.S. President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that American officials had held a meeting lasting nearly three hours with Iranian representatives. Iranian state media later confirmed that Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met with U.S. representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly and added another layer to an already complex diplomatic environment.

Although the details of the meeting were not fully disclosed, its occurrence demonstrated that diplomatic contacts have continued despite the military confrontation. The two sides remain far apart on major issues, but communication through officials and intermediaries has remained part of the wider effort to explore possible pathways toward ending the conflict.

For Tehran, the United Nations provides a platform to present its position directly before representatives of countries around the world. Iranian officials have sought to portray their country as defending its sovereignty while calling for international diplomacy and opposition to military pressure.

Pezeshkian has also been expected to use his time in New York for meetings with several heads of state and senior officials attending the General Assembly. Such bilateral meetings are an important part of the annual UN gathering, where leaders often use the margins of the formal debate to discuss conflicts, security arrangements, economic relations and diplomatic initiatives.

The Iranian president’s programme also includes meetings with Iranian academics and members of the Iranian community living in the United States, as well as discussions with American intellectuals and think tanks. These engagements are intended to broaden the diplomatic dimension of his visit beyond formal meetings with governments and international organisations.

Iran’s diplomatic team has been active in New York since the arrival of Araghchi on Monday. The foreign minister’s meetings have focused on regional developments, the war involving Iran, diplomatic efforts and Iran’s position on international issues. His presence has also provided Tehran with an opportunity to engage with foreign governments while the president prepares and delivers his major address.

The 81st UN General Assembly is being held in New York during a period of intense geopolitical uncertainty. The annual gathering has brought together world leaders at a time when several major conflicts are placing pressure on the international system. The Iran conflict is among the most closely watched issues because of its potential consequences for the wider Middle East, global energy markets and international security.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the central concerns surrounding the confrontation. The waterway is a major route for global energy shipments, and developments involving Iran and the strait have raised concerns about the wider economic consequences of prolonged regional instability. Any sustained disruption could have implications beyond the Middle East, affecting energy supplies, shipping costs and international markets.

Iran has consistently maintained that regional security should involve the countries of the region rather than depend primarily on foreign military forces. Pezeshkian has also emphasized relations with neighboring countries and has sought to present diplomacy as an alternative to continued escalation.

Another major issue surrounding Iran’s presence at the United Nations is its nuclear programme. Tehran continues to insist that its nuclear activities are intended for peaceful purposes and has rejected allegations that it is seeking nuclear weapons. Western governments and Israel have continued to express concerns about Iran’s nuclear capabilities and the possibility that its programme could provide the basis for the development of nuclear weapons.

The nuclear dispute has become even more complicated because of the wider military confrontation. Diplomatic efforts to address Iran’s nuclear programme have repeatedly been affected by broader disagreements between Tehran and Washington. The question of whether negotiations can resume, under what conditions and with what guarantees remains central to any potential diplomatic settlement.

Pezeshkian’s presence at the General Assembly also gives Iran an opportunity to address the situation in Gaza and the wider Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Tehran has strongly criticized Israel’s military campaign in Gaza and has called for greater international pressure over the humanitarian situation. The Gaza war remains one of the major issues dominating the current UN session, alongside the Iran conflict and other international crises.

The Iranian government has sought to connect these issues to what it describes as a broader challenge to international law and the existing international security system. Tehran argues that countries should not be able to use military force without facing international consequences. Western governments and Israel, meanwhile, have presented Iran’s regional activities and military capabilities as major security concerns.

These competing narratives are likely to remain at the center of diplomatic discussions in New York.

Pezeshkian’s visit also carries domestic political significance for Iran. His government has sought to balance competing demands: defending Iran’s sovereignty and military response while keeping open the possibility of negotiations that could reduce the pressure created by the conflict. His remarks at the United Nations therefore serve both an international diplomatic purpose and a message to the Iranian public.

The president’s decision to travel to New York despite the continuing conflict reflects the importance Tehran attaches to international diplomacy. The Iranian delegation faced restrictions on its movements in the United States, with Washington approving the participation of a core delegation while imposing limitations on other members. The United States has said its decision was connected to its obligations as host country under the UN Headquarters Agreement.

The General Assembly itself provides a rare setting where leaders from countries that are directly opposed to one another can appear on the same international stage. The speeches often contain sharply different interpretations of the same events, but the gathering also creates opportunities for direct and indirect diplomatic contacts.

For Iran, the central message in New York is that military pressure will not force Tehran to abandon its core positions, while diplomacy remains possible if negotiations are conducted without threats or coercion. For the United States, the central challenge is to determine whether diplomatic pressure can produce an agreement that addresses Washington’s security concerns while preventing a wider regional escalation.

The coming days could therefore be important for determining whether the diplomatic contacts surrounding the UN General Assembly develop into a more structured process. At present, however, major differences remain between the two sides, and there has been no publicly announced comprehensive agreement ending the conflict.

Pezeshkian’s visit is taking place as international attention remains focused on the possibility of further escalation. The war has already transformed the political and security environment across the Middle East, while the uncertainty surrounding the Strait of Hormuz has added an economic dimension to the crisis.

Against this backdrop, the Iranian president’s appearance at the United Nations is more than a routine diplomatic visit. It is an opportunity for Tehran to put its position before the international community, challenge the narrative presented by Washington and Israel, and signal that Iran remains interested in diplomacy while rejecting demands it considers unacceptable.

Whether those diplomatic efforts can produce a sustainable political settlement remains uncertain. What is clear is that the 81st United Nations General Assembly has become a major diplomatic arena for the confrontation between Iran and the United States, with regional security, the nuclear issue, Gaza and global energy stability all connected to the outcome.

As world leaders continue their meetings in New York, the focus will remain on whether dialogue can move beyond statements and produce concrete steps toward reducing the conflict. For now, Tehran is presenting two messages simultaneously: Iran says it will continue to defend itself against military pressure, while maintaining that diplomacy remains possible.

The coming negotiations, meetings and diplomatic contacts around the United Nations may determine whether those two positions can eventually be brought together into a framework capable of ending the confrontation.

For Iran, the message from New York is therefore clear: resistance and diplomacy remain central elements of its current foreign-policy position, while the government seeks international support for its interpretation of the conflict and continues to engage with governments and international actors.

For the wider international community, the stakes extend beyond the immediate confrontation. The future of regional security, the stability of global energy routes, the direction of Iran’s nuclear programme and the prospects for renewed diplomacy between Tehran and Washington are all closely connected.

The 81st UN General Assembly has provided the stage. The next question is whether the diplomatic contacts taking place behind the scenes can produce a path away from further escalation.
