The United States and Saudi Arabia have carried out joint airstrikes against Iran-linked armed groups in Iraq, marking another escalation in the growing tensions across the Middle East. The US Central Command (CENTCOM) said the strikes were conducted early Wednesday against what it described as militant infrastructure and weapons storage facilities in eastern Iraq, following a series of drone attacks allegedly carried out by Iran-backed Iraqi factions against Saudi energy facilities. According to the US military, the operation was launched in response to around 30 drone attacks over the past 72 hours that were allegedly directed by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Washington claimed that Iran-aligned groups in Iraq had carried out hundreds of attacks against US and Saudi personnel and infrastructure between February and April, warning that further attacks would result in additional military action. Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Defense confirmed that the strikes were coordinated with US Central Command and targeted Iraqi militias accused of attacking Saudi oil and energy facilities. The latest military action comes after drone strikes targeted petroleum infrastructure in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province and the Riyadh region earlier this week, raising concerns over the security of Gulf energy supplies. Saudi defense ministry spokesman Brigadier General Turki Al-Maliki said Riyadh does not seek further escalation but would respond to any new attacks by armed groups. The strikes add another dangerous dimension to the ongoing confrontation between the United States, its Gulf allies, and Iran-aligned forces in the region, as fears grow that continued retaliation could widen the conflict beyond Iraq’s borders and further destabilize the Middle East.
