Baghdad witnessed one of its most extensive security operations in recent years as Iraqi security forces launched a coordinated crackdown across the capital, arresting 47 suspects, including members of parliament, former ministers, and senior government officials, while simultaneously hosting Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi for high-level diplomatic talks. Security units were heavily deployed around Baghdad International Airport, the fortified Green Zone, and Sadr City, creating an unprecedented security perimeter as authorities intensified efforts against alleged corruption and abuse of power. According to Iraqi sources, the operation was triggered by confessions reportedly made by former Oil Ministry Undersecretary Adnan al-Jumaili following the seizure of approximately $10 million in cash, along with weapons and gold, prompting investigators to expand their inquiry into an alleged network involving influential political and administrative figures. Among those reportedly detained are Azm Alliance leader Muthanna al-Samarrai, former Finance Minister Tayf Sami, former Planning Minister Nabil al-Kazem, former Oil Minister Ihsan Abdul Jabbar, and at least 15 sitting members of parliament. The sweeping arrests have immediately drawn national and regional attention, with analysts describing the operation as one of Iraq’s most significant anti-corruption campaigns in recent years. The timing has further fueled political speculation, as the crackdown coincided with the arrival of Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who held talks with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani focusing on the proposed U.S.–Iran memorandum of understanding, regional security developments, bilateral cooperation, and the evolving geopolitical landscape of the Middle East. Observers believe the overlap between a major domestic security operation and a high-profile diplomatic visit highlights the complexity of Iraq’s current political environment, where internal governance, anti-corruption efforts, and regional strategic interests continue to intersect. As investigations progress, the outcome of the operation could have far-reaching implications not only for Iraq’s domestic political stability but also for the broader balance of power and diplomatic dynamics across the Middle East.
